Footy Comeback Week 2 update

Hi All

Well game 2 of my Aussie Rules comeback was not a great one, the team was short leaving us with no one on the bench resulting in the coach and runner pulling on a jumper for the just in case factor. Although us being short was a bad thing it also gave me much needed game time on the ground allowing me to start on the field. I started in a back pocket a position I have probably only played 4 or 5 times in my entire career so it was a bit different. On top of not playing the position we were playing a fit team with a strong bench meaning the ball was down there constantly, the player I was on was either clever or really lazy and he wasn’t keen to go at the ball much and always ended get the ball over the back, most of the time it looked like he almost hadn’t moved and happened to just be in the right place.

At quarter time I got moved to the half forward line and managed to get a couple of possessions, but continually found myself over running the ball, miss reading the bounce, getting a bad bounce or just fumbling the ball it was very frustrating.

At half time the body was starting to stiffen up a little as it was more than I had run in a long time, I got a my hands on the ball early in the third and when pushing my self hard to mark a ball I felt it got ping my right hamstring was gone, I pulled up super quick barely able to put pressure I my right leg even though the ball was still in the vicinity I could barely move the leg was tight and any movement of my leg shot pain through my hamstring. I came from the ground instantly I spent the rest of the game watching the rest of the 100 point drubbing from the bench. I had never done a hamstring before but I can tell you it is painful, until straining the muscle you have no idea how much you use it. It was my right leg so driving home was agony braking accelerating everything causing pain to shoot through my leg. I was suppose to be at the showdown but I needed to get home and start icing the hammy, I have a split level house and getting up those five stairs to get to the freezer felt like I was climbing a mountain. I spent the night on and off icing it until trying to sleep which was annoying that night any movement of my leg and I was awake. The next day I was pretty much stuck to the couch which sucked because I was suppose to be the one doing everything for my wife (Sarah) with it being Mothers day and I have arranged for my sister to come over for lunch to have an early birthday lunch for Sarah’s birthday.

Two days on now there is still some pain and quite a bit of discomfort walking, driving and almost anything relating to moving my leg. Looks like game 3 of the footy comeback might be a few weeks away.

For the next week or so compression bandages and in a few days some light stretching followed by trying to strengthen the muscle and surrounding muscles such as the glutes to stop it from happening again.

My Footy Comeback

As mentioned in last weeks weekly wrap I had been thinking about playing football again, after much thinking I decided to give it ago. Yesterday I made  my debut for the Modbury Hawks D grade and wow did it show me exactly how unfit I really am. I sat on the bench for the first half and when I finally I got on the ground I played for about 10 minutes and my leg muscles were tightening and I could barely breath. I have a long way to go in the fitness side of things to be able to run out a quarter let alone a game.

I managed to get a couple of handballs in my 20 odd minutes in the second half and laid a shepherd which allowed a team mate to kick a goal. I had my own chance to get on the score board but fumbled the dew covered ball.

After game one based on my limited playing time the legs are fine but my left shoulder is in a fair bit of pain I don’t even remember the incident which injured it but I know that the point of my shoulder is dam sore. It has a similar type of pain to when I injured my AC joint when I was younger. So the play for the next week is just to limit use of it where possible and apply volataren over the next week to allow it to heal enough to play next week.

From here improvement is tough, I am going to struggle to get out on the training track in time to participate in training with Sarah not getting home from work until half way through training. Maybe for the time being I can head out late and just focus on running to get some k’s into the legs and improve my lung capacity and treat it similar to a preseason and hopefully the skills come back naturally over time the more game time I get throughout the rest of the season.

Goals for this season other than to just get through it, it would be great to get on the scoreboard, start on the ground and run out an entire quarter. Small steps in the comeback, If get through the rest of the season then I can sit back and seriously think about next season, will I go around again which at this point I would like to, if so am I going to put a bit more work into and really give it everything possible. Only time well tell on this though depending how this year goes.

Over the next few weeks I will try to organise some photos and video footage of how I am progressing.

Cheers

Matt

Weekly Wrap 28th April 2018

Even though this week was a short week at work it felt like a long one, getting back into the work groove after a few weeks off was tough, that being said I still made time to get on Mates Madness early in the week to share another of the videos taken whilst I was in Melbourne on my family holiday. Check out the active animals at the Melbourne Zoo.

Kieran shared his overall Batman collection, there is some pretty cool stuff there. Do you guys have a favourite from his current Batman Collection

Kieran and I also conducted a little bit of mad science (see the pun, Mates Madness) we dropped a whole heap of different lollies into Coca Cola (Coke) to check out the different reactions so pretty cool and some were fizzers.

As mentioned above it was short work week with Anzac Day falling mid week on a Wednesday, Lest We Forget. A day of acknowledgement of a fallen soldiers a day where we reflect on the significant sacrifices made by the Australian and New Zealand soldiers to enable us to have the life that we have today.

Mates Madness launched a new app and probably the best app that we have made so far Astronaut Space Walk a flappy bird clone but instead of an Astronaut dodging Super Mario style tubes you guide an Astronaut between the satellites on his space walk, its no where near as easy as it looks.

Kieran shared his AFL fantasy team and explained some of his reasons behind his selections and his lack of trades, personally with Ablett being injured for a few weeks now I would have traded him out or at least moved him to the bench, there are also some really good new players in the AFL system this year getting games already so I have made some changes to my bench players before prices went up and grabbed some really good bargains on those players but its looks like he has missed out on that.

That’s where the site but not where my week ended, Friday afternoon I found out one of the guys who works at my youngest daughters child care plays footy and his team the Modbury Hawks forfeited the week before because they were short of players. I have not played football (Aussies Rules) in 8-9 years about this time every year I get itchy feet and consider going back out to play somewhere. This information about Modbury has given me itchy feet. Modbury’s ground is only 5 minutes from home and they are also the Hawks which is a big selling point for me. The team he plays in is the D grade so the bottom end competition and considering how long its been since I have played and how unfit I am its the perfect place for me to have a go. Yesterday to help me decide I went out to watch the team play (the C grade had a bye so a few players dropped down for the day giving the them a full side). The team looks good there are a few good players and also a few not so good players who are just out there to have a bit of fun like what I am thinking of doing. This is encouraging for me because it means I wont look out of place while I find a bit of fitness and allowing my skill level to gradually improve over the course of the season. So I have something to think about, if I am going to play I need to make a decision by Wednesday as I will need to go buy some boots and stuff and train and meet the team Thursday night to give me a shot at playing this coming weekend. I will keep you updated with my decision and if I decide to play I will try to arrange either Kieran or someone else to come watch to try to capture some footage of how I go.

Thats a wrap folks

Weekly Wrap 22nd April 2018

A more up beat week over the last 7 days, a few shares from my holiday last weekend (more to come next week). The first was my footy footage of the Hawks V Melbourne

A great game to watch all be it freezing cold, even Iron Man made and appearance to promote an  Avengers event in Melbourne. Throughout the rest of the week to be honest I lazed around trying to relax and enjoy the the rest of my holidays from work which didn’t quite go to plan with plenty of house work needing to be done.

I also shared with you all footage from Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium a place my girls aged 6 and 3 loved there was so many different marine animals to see and the tanks were fantastic you got a great view of most of them, Laila my eldest loved the penguins but there were plenty of other fish to see

We would love for you to subscribe to our you tube channel, Kieran got a hair cut and showed us his new do he was also quite excited when his team Geelong got up over Port Adelaide

Something we didn’t discuss here on the Mates Madness website but was a pretty big effort in sport (shared on our twitter account) was Oakland A’s left handed pitching pitching the first no hitter of the 2018 MLB season and the first for the Boston no hit game for the Boston Red Sox since Aprill 22 1993 25 years ago.

So if you have not done so follow us on Twitter, subscribe to our You Tube channel and share this post on your socials and any other post here on Mates Madness that you enjoy.

Port Adelaide vs Geelong Round 5 Anzac Round 2018

Hey

as you guys know me and Matt have season membership passes to all port home games and me being a Geelong supporter I was happy about this being a Port home game as I only get to wear my Geelong stuff to watch them live once maybe twice a year.

You can see all the Port Adelaide vs Geelong footage I took in the video below of what I got. With it being the Anzac round, they do the last post and National Anthem you can almost hear a pin drop with how quiet it is in the ground and it just picks up when the National Anthem is done with the players go back and wait for the game to start.

I was happy with the result but I would of thought the Peter Badcoe medal should of gone to somebody else then Joel Selwood I would like to see George Horlin-Smith win it. Because George was on the ball more than Joel and Had more Disposals and didn’t lose the ball to much ever.

But other then that this was an alright game of football and I hope it will be like this for the rest of the year
after the game we went and got some tea and went back to Damo house and played some NBA 2k18. I was just watching Matt and Damo play, they chose to go all-time best with Matt picking the New York Knicks and Damo picking The Philadelphia 76ers. Damo won the game with Wilt Chamberlin dominating getting 29 points and 17 rebounds.

Maybe we might do a post on us playing each other and seeing who is the best.

Until next time
Kieran

Afternoon at the MCG Hawthorn V Melbourne

So on the Sunday of my family holiday I went to the MCG to check watch the Hawks play the Demons, I was pretty excited I don’t get to see Hawthorn in Melbourne very often so I was really hoping for a win for the Hawks. The weather was not great and I had on only my Hawks media polo from a few years ago so with it only being about 17 degrees and raining on and off I was getting pretty cold. Check out the jacket I brought below (not my best selfie effort) maybe I could smile or something…

I had a great view of the game on the wing almost directly in line with the centre circle, throughout the game I took a whole bunch of video as well check out the merged video footage

My Hawthorn v Melbourne footage MCG 15 April 2018, big win by the Hawks over the Demons

I tried to capture a few goals and some centre clearances, being a Hawks fan I focused way more on when they had the ball. Forgive my poor footage at times I got distracted watching the game sorry…

I found it great to watch Tom Mitchell live, he didn’t have his best game but he works hard always running and getting very few cheap possessions. Melbourne paid him very close attention and the stoppages with Jones almost glued to him yet he was still the leading clearance getting for the game. I reckon he has a great shot to win a Brownlow over the next 2-4 years if he stays injury free. He does need to work on his disposal a little more, he doesn’t quite have the elite kicking skills of some of the more recent great Hawthorn midfielders.

Roughy started slow but got into the game as it went on and we are finally starting to see dividends into the Hawks recruitment of Jaeger O’Meara if he can stay injury free they have a pretty impressive midfield.

Day out at the Footy – Port V Brisbane

Hi All

Yesterday Kieran and I went to the Port v Brisbane game at Adelaide oval, we actually go to most Port games due to holding members general admin tickets. Yesterday’s game was much closer that it should have been Port rocked up looking like the expected to win and a result looked lazy and unwilling to run. Check out the video below for part of the warmup, and the Port pre bounce count down right through to the first score.

AFL rnd 3 Port Power vs Brisbane Lions, pre game warmup bounce count down and first score. You have to love it he atmosphere pre bounce with Port's unique count down to the first bounce the crowd really gets involved

Port had plenty of chances to put Brisbane away especially early but could not kick straight and Brisbane made the most of there opportunities and a one point had 4 goals from 5 inside 50’s. Port finally kicked away in the 3rd but let the Lions back in the last as it looked like the Power players had put the cue in the rack and decided they had, had enough for the day. As a result the game finished within a goal and spend most of the last few minutes down the Brisbane attacking end. Port were lucky to get away with the win.

After the game we headed over the Strathmore for a drink whilst we were there we ran into my old next door neighbour Bob and his family in the pokies so we hung around for abit had a few more drinks and chatted a few drinks later Damo drove into the city to get Kieran and I as Bob had dinner reservations. The 3 of headed out for dinner outside the city in the direction of home – at this point 5 or so Jacks and Coke in I really needed to eat. After dinner we sat around and talked shit for abit and Damo and I went head to head at darts on his phone and I came out the big winner something like 2 games to 5, doubles were so much easier to hit on the phone…

After that we headed home but it was a great day out with Mates something that was one of the reasons we built this site, to encourage both ourselves and others to ensure and help people find away to get out relax and unwind with there mates. Throughout the footy season if we go out before or after a game this year I will try to share our time out with you all, this wont be every game as going out is not cheap but we will try to do something every few games.

Cheers

Matt
